Julia had never been to detention before. Upon walking in, she saw it was just another classroom, albeit a large one.

She was the first student to arrive. Mr. Healey, one of the two gym teachers, was already present. But then, he probably didn’t even have to move, Julia thought. He just sat his fat ass right there in his chair and waited. Julia wished she could scream about the irony of having a fat gym teacher from the rooftops, but pointing out such truths often landed one in detention, she was finding.

Julia presented her detention slip to Mr. Healey, who made no effort whatsoever to intercept it. She practically had to lay on top of the desk to put it into his hand. “Thank you, Miss… uh, Terah… Have a seat. Anywhere you like.”

She picked a seat near the middle of the room and watched as several other misfits straggled in. One by one, Mr. Healey checked them off his list. “Let’s see,” Mr. Healey said, glancing over his roll call sheet, “we seem to be missing one more. A Mr. Desmond Terah.”

Julia snorted out a laugh and everyone turned to stare at her.

“Ah, yes. Here he comes, now,” Mr. Healey said.

They turned and looked through the door at an out-of-breath Desmond hurrying down the hall. Desmond entered and immediately huffed out an apology. “I couldn’t find the room, sorry.”

“We’re all just happy that you could make it,” Mr. Healey said in monotone. “Take a seat, Mr. Terah.”

Desmond was shocked to see his sister waving to him, and he took an open desk next to hers.

“Alright, people. Listen up. These are the rules of detention: there is to be no talking, no fraternizing, and no horse-play of any kind. You may work on your schoolwork or sit in silent contemplation of your remarkable lives. Any questions? No? Good. Do your time, get it over with, and we’ll all be out of here before you know it.” With his speech finished, Mr. Healey resumed perusing the sports page of the local paper.

Hushed conversation immediately broke out among the detainees. Julia and Desmond watched, waiting for any kind of authoritative response to the violation of rule number one, but Mr. Healey gave no indication of caring.

“From the welcome speech, you’d think we landed ourselves in prison,” Julia said.

Desmond smiled. “Do your time and it’ll all be over before you know it,” Desmond did his best to quietly imitate the gym teacher’s nasally voice.

Julia giggled at his impression and then shushed him. “Don’t get us in any more trouble. Mom’s gonna be pissed enough as it is.”

“Aw, crap! I hadn’t even thought about that. I was too worried about trying to find where this place was, and then—”

“Speaking of which,” Julia interrupted. “What ever did you do to get cast in here with all of us other ruffians?”

She’d said it with a British accent and Desmond thought about replying in kind, but as his sister loved to point out, his accent was shite. Instead, he answered in his normal voice.
